Halloween is right around the corner and so is Trick-or-Treat. Those of you who have children know what this means: mountains of candy containing (way too much) sugar, artificial food dye, and other potentially harmful ingredients. As parents we don’t want to ruin all the fun for our children on the one hand, on the other hand we also want to keep them safe and sound. As a mother of three boys I can absolutely relate. Therefore, I would like to share a few strategies that my husband and I have implemented to allow our children to have a blast on Halloween while keeping them healthy (and happy)!
1. Giving out healthy treats to Trick-or-Treaters (what better way to teach your children healthy holiday strategies than to show them): Organic fruit leather, organic juice boxes, organic candy, small toys/non edibles (bracelets, stickers, bubbles, bouncy balls, etc.)
2. The (infamous) Switch Witch: This is a great opportunity for the kids to practice self-control and get rewarded for it at the same time (in a safe, healthy way)! Here is how it works: As soon as the children return from trick-or-treating, they gather all of their candy and leave it on the back porch. At night, the “switch witch” appears and swaps out the candy for a toy. The kids get to enjoy Halloween with their friends while being physically active (think of all the walking they do while trick-or-treating) and receive a great toy in the end. It’s a win-win situation for both parents and children alike!
